METHODS AND TERMINOLOGY
All measurements were made from fully dry, mounted specimens under a binocular microscope fitted with 10 x oculars. Most readings were taken at a magnification of 30 x , although those of most males and larger species were taken at 20 x. Measurements were made with the use of a Mitutoyo 4 x 4 X/Y axis stage fitted with two Mitutoyo digital readout micrometer heads. All measurements are recorded in millimeters.

Cephalic index (CI). Head width x 100/head length
Eye length (EL). Maximum length of eye with head in full face view (fig. 1)
Maximum head length (MHL). The maximum measurable length of the head, positioned in perfect full face view. (fig. 2)
Maximum head width (MHW). The maximum width of the head, positioned in full face view, measured across the widest portion of the head (workers). In the male caste the measurement is taken in full face view, and measured across the eyes. (fig. 2)
Interocellar distance (IOD), Male only; minimum distance between the inner margin of the posterior ocelli, from above (fig. 1)
Mandibular length (ML). Length measured in a straight line from the outer mandibular insertion to the tip of the mandible.
Ocellar diameter (OD). Male only: maximum measurable diameter of the anterior ocellus.
Ocellar-ocular distance (OOD). Male only; minimum measurable distance between the outer margin of the posterior ocellus and the and inner eye margin, from above (fig. 1)
Petiole length (PL). Petiole measured in lateral view from the front of the spiracle to the posterior margin of the posterior peduncle(fig. 3)
Petiole width (PW). Petiole measured in dorsal view across it's greatest measurable width (fig. 4)
Pilosity. The longer, stouter hair hairs or setae, outstanding form the cuticular surface. Terminology to indicate degree of inclination after Wilson (1955)
(fig. 4)
Postpetiole length (PPL). Postpetiole measured in lateral view from anterior margin of the spiracle to the posterior margin of the posterior peduncle (fig. 3)
Postpetiole width (PPW). Postpetiole measured across it's greatest measurable width in dorsal view (fig. 3)
Pubescence. The short, fine appressed hairs underlying the pilosity. (fig. 5)
Scape length (SL). The maximum measurable length of the scape, excluding the basal condyle.
